We’re a lucky bunch in Queensland. With the exception of the hot, sticky months of January and February, our weather is pretty much perfect year round and with that comes plenty of opportunities to enjoy our great outdoors.
Traditional Queensland houses, with their full width front veranda’s and expansive back decks were designed ‘back in the day’ to capture breezes and give residents relief from the punishing summer heat. It is probably this feature more than any other that we associate with these beautiful homes.
So it’s no surprise that as these houses have been renovated, decks, veranda’s and courtyards have remained an important feature. If you’re looking to renovate your home, I have compiled a list of the features I’ve found add most value to outdoor spaces, both from a liveability and increased property value perspective.
Covered decks
If possible, adding a cover to your deck will ensure it used more often. It will provide protection from the sun and allow you to create a second or third lounge/dining space.
Outdoor Kitchens
Adding a bbq, bar fridges, and even pizza oven to your deck or courtyard adds enormous value to your property. Entertaining becomes a breeze for the homeowner and it is seen as a great value add when listing a house for sale.
Gateway to Nature
Regardless of whether your outdoor living space has direct access to a backyard or not, having this space invites the outdoors in and connects us to nature which we all know is fabulous for reducing stress levels. Make sure any screening that helps with Western sun is retractable and any stairs leading to the yard are well maintained.
A special note on Courtyards or Small Backyards
A courtyard or small backyard is becoming more common as renovations take up more of a properties usable land. These spaces can be used effectively with clever planning. There are some fabulous landscape architects in the area who can turn these areas into your own personal paradise. Get in touch with me if you would like some contacts in this area.
